Luke Wash Bridge at Old US 80
Project #: TT0748
Project Description
Channel protection project
In October 2022, a large rainfall event caused damage to the west abutment of the bridge over Luke Wash along Old US 80. MCDOT completed emergency repairs to the roadway and roadway embankment. These emergency repairs included slurry backfill behind the abutment, a concrete cutoff wall, and placement of riprap. A portion of the bridge approach slab was also removed and replaced.
The goal of this project is to construct a permanent drainage improvement to re-establish the flow path under the existing bridge and prevent future channel migration and erosion. MCDOT will regrade the existing channel and stabilize the banks with Cement-Stabilized Alluvium (CSA), commonly known as soil cement, to realign the wash to be in line with the existing bridge opening.
Launchable riprap will be placed under the bridge just downstream of the CSA to protect the roadway embankment under the bridge from eroding out and to provide an interface between the native soils and the CSA. The existing boulders placed with the emergency repair will be repurposed around the downstream side of the bridge.
Construction is anticipated to begin in early winter, 2024; traffic related restrictions will be in place during work hours and MCDOT will notify the public in advance of these restrictions.
