Carefree Highway and 36th Street Intersection Improvements

Project #: TT0720

Project Description

The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) has plans to make improvements at the intersection of Carefree Highway and 36th Street. In summer 2025, the Carefree Highway at 36th Street Project completed the scoping process and is now being designed.

The proposed improvements include:

  • An eastbound acceleration lane to assist with merging from 36th Street onto Carefree Highway.
  • A raised intersection median.
  • New paving on portions of Carefree Highway within the project area.

A new traffic signal was evaluated during the scoping process; however one is not warranted at this location based on traffic studies.

Next Steps: Design is underway. Updates will be provided periodically as the project progresses toward construction, with anticipated construction in FY 2027.

MCDOT is dedicated to working with residents to provide transportation connections that improve people’s lives. If you have questions or comments to share, please call us at 602.506.3342 or email to [email protected].
